We remember Chicago black history makers from the past present and future! Happy Black History Month!

Uncle Remus was founded and created by Gus and Mary Rickette who traveled from Leland, MS to Chicago to create a better life for their family. After learning about the food industry, they established 3 Royal Chicken locations by March of 1963. Two of the three locations were later burned down during the 1968 riots. While one location was still standing, Gus was looking to get a sign made for the outside of the establishment. The cheapest sign they could find was one premade with the words `Uncle Remus’  already on it. Gus bought it and later officially changed the restaurant name to Uncle Remus in 1969.

Majani Soulful Vegan cuisine is a vegan restaurant located on Chicago’s south side. Chef T has been vegan for 20 years and set out to create and prepare vegan food by using recipes that resonate with his african heritage. Chef T launched Majani with his wife Nasya to bring fresh dining options to well deserving communities in the community. While recreating nostalgic recipes and making them plant-based, Chef T and Nasya plan on growing the Majani brand and giving a new culinary experience to vegans and non-vegans.
