Imagine completing parole for a previous felony gun case and casually catching an Uber with a machine gun. According to CWB CHICAGO, 24-year-old DePaul Jenkins fell asleep in an Uber driver’s Hyundai Sonata around 5:30 a.m. on May 19th. In an attempt to wake up Jenkins, the driver decided to call the police instead after noticing a gun on his lap.
When officials arrived they made several attempts to wake Jenkins in the 2100 block of East 71st Street where he was found sleeping with a firearm lying between his feet next to his cell phone. He eventually woke up and admitted to officers it was his.
The gun was a .40-caliber Glock with an extended magazine and a switch that could make it fire rounds automatically, police said. The presiding Judge Rivera offered several reasons for detaining Jenkins, including the fact that he was discharged from parole in April for possessing a stolen firearm and that he was “observed in possession of a machine gun while in an UBER.”
He is charged with unlawful possession of a machine gun.
