DAY LABORERS ALLEGEDLY DETAINED AND BEATEN BY OFF DUTY CHICAGO POLICE OFFICERS AT HOME DEPOT

A legal case has been filed against off-duty police officers who work as security guards for Home Depot. It alleges that they are singling out day laborers, believed to be recent Venezuelan immigrants, for mistreatment and arrest. Demonstrators from the Raise the Floor Alliance gathered outside federal court on Tuesday to protest what they describe as a consistent pattern of mistreatment towards recent migrants seeking work as day laborers. They also announced the filing of a lawsuit against the Home Depot at West 45th Street and South Western Avenue, as well as at least two off-duty Chicago police officers who provide security there.

The lawsuit outlines five distinct incidents, starting in October of last year, where they claim recent South American migrants were apprehended and charged with criminal trespass after being held and physically harmed by security guards hired by Home Depot, all while laborers of other ethnicities were left unbothered.
