Newly released bodycam footage shows a Virginia police officer fatally shooting a knife-wielding woman who slashed the officer during a wellness check last month.
Sydney Wilson, 33, was fatally shot by Fairfax County officer Peter Liu in the hall of her apartment building in Reston, just outside Washington D.C., on Sept. 16 after cops were called to carry out a welfare check on her, police said.
The footage shows Wilson opening the door suddenly and immediately slashing at Liu with a knife. The officer quickly backed up into the hallway and drew his firearm and ordered Wilson to retreat.
He orders her to stop, but she continues walking toward him, backing him up to the end of a short, dead-end hallway, where the officer eventually opened fire. Wilson can be seen charging at the officer with the knife before he fires three shots to stop the attack.
Wilson, who stood 6’5″ and weighed 330 pounds, had a history of mental health issues and had previously interacted with police.
Davis confirmed that Officer Liu involved has been placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome of both a criminal and administrative investigation.
