Just two days before Christmas, a video emerged on social media showing dozens of migrants in Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood who were forced out into the cold.
City officials gathered at a large apartment building on the South Shore, located at 74th and South Phillips, on Monday, December 23. The Chicago Police Department had a significant presence at the scene. According to representatives from the office of Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, the evacuation of migrants was necessary due to unsafe living conditions.
From the looks of the video and the complaints from Community members, the operation was both chaotic and heavy-handed.
Despite the presence of warming buses and support from various city agencies, including the Salvation Army, migrants reported receiving insufficient notice about the removals.
The Salvation Army reported serious issues with building residents, citing an overpopulation that has led to deplorable living conditions.
According to WGN News, six families were transported to the New Life Shelter, while others were taken to the city’s new intake center.
