MIKI HOWARD SPEAKS ON HER CONCERNS ABOUT THE CURRENT STATE OF BLACK MUSIC

Legendary singer/songwriter Miki Howard speaks on the current state of mainstream black music, specifically referencing the controversial Grammy performance by Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion.

During Howard’s interview on the Smitty & Dee’s Podcast, she expressed that the phrase “bumping vaginas” felt humiliating for her as an African American woman who has contributed to paving the way for modern artists. While she holds no ill will toward these performers, she emphasized that it has always been pornography in music; they have a place, but it is not in the mainstream.

Howard reflected on the evolution of rap music, noting that it once functioned as a powerful medium for expressing truth, aspirations, and storytelling. She referenced influential figures like Cab Calloway and the tradition of “Hambone” to illustrate that rhythmic expression has deep roots in cultural history.

While praising artists like Sam Smith and Adele, she expressed regret that many gifted musicians are overlooked, leaving a void in music’s ability to inspire and uplift. Howard’s reflections highlight a deep yearning for a return to authenticity and artistry in music.
