A young North Carolina woman was doused in gasoline and set on fire by a sick suspect who then fled — leaving her heartbroken mother wondering, “How could they do this to my baby?”
On December 16th, 20-year-old Ashanti Downey was walking to Dollar General when a person approached her, poured a flammable liquid on her, and then set her on fire. She was quickly rushed to the hospital and later transferred to a burn center, where she was treated for second and third-degree burns on the right side of her body.
Downey’s mother, Donecia Davis, created a GoFundMe for her daughter’s medical expenses. At the time of publication, the fundraiser has received over $25,000 towards its $75,000 goal.
The Harnett County Sherrif’s Department is still searching for suspects in this crime, saying it is one of the most heinous things they’ve seen.
