Charlamagne tha God highlighted the “hypocrisy” of individuals who criticized rappers for their performances at President Donald Trump’s inauguration while failing to hold Democrats accountable for their recent dealings with him.
Even prior to Monday’s inauguration, several rappers faced backlash when their names were associated with the incoming president. Rick Ross was spotted performing at an event the night before, while fellow artists Snoop Dogg and Nelly participated in the celebrations on the day of the inauguration.
During Tuesday’s episode of The Breakfast Club, Charlamagne shared why he believed people were excusing Democrats by concentrating their anger on the rappers.
“The hypocrisy that individuals show regarding their preferences is astonishing to me,” Charlamagne remarked. “There’s no way you can be more upset with rappers for taking part in these inauguration celebrations than you are with the elected officials who labeled Trump a ‘fascist,’ a ‘threat to democracy,’ and a ‘danger to our country and the Constitution.’ They compared him to Hitler, yet people like [Joe Biden] have welcomed him back to the White House. [Barack Obama] was chuckling it up with him at President Carter’s funeral.
“We understand why the rappers chose to act as they did. We know their motives. They received payment. What justification do the politicians have for making Trump seem acceptable?”
In the face of criticism, Nelly stood by his choice to perform at the Inaugural Ball following the swearing-in of President-elect Donald Trump on Monday. The 50-year-old rapper spoke with Willie D during a YouTube stream on Saturday after it was disclosed that he would take the stage at the Liberty Ball, one of three official inaugural events, on Inauguration Day. He emphasized that he is “not political” and that his performance does not signify an endorsement of Trump.
When asked directly if he supports Trump during the stream, Nelly reiterated, “I support the president of the United States, no matter who is in office. I respect the office.” Nelly joins the list of artists who have announced performances for the inauguration and later faced backlash.
