President Donald Trump is expected to sign an executive order to diminish the Department of Education at the White House on Thursday, according to NBC News.
Trump will hold an event at the White House to sign the order directing Education Secretary Linda McMahon to “take all necessary steps to facilitate the closure the Department of Education and return education authority to the States, while continuing to ensure the effective and uninterrupted delivery of services, programs, and benefits on which Americans rely.”
“President Trump’s executive order to expand educational opportunities will empower parents, states, and communities to take control and improve outcomes for all students,” White House spokesperson Harrison Fields said in a statement.
However, finalizing its dismantling is likely impossible without an act of Congress, which created the department in 1979.
