Chicago’s hip-hop airwaves are undergoing a significant change as Streetz 95.1 prepares to go silent. Core Radio Group announced it will cease programming on W236CF Chicago, which is fed by TelevisaUnivision’s 105.1 WOJO-HD2 Evanston, at the end of April 2025 .
Launched in April 2021, Streetz 95.1 brought a fresh voice to Chicago’s urban radio scene. The station featured the nationally syndicated “Young Joc and the Streetz Morning Take Over,” distributed by Superadio Networks, and a local afternoon show hosted by Trey “The Choklit Jok.” Despite its efforts, the station faced challenges in a competitive market dominated by established players like WGCI 107.5-FM and WPWX 92.3-FM.
Steve Hegwood, President and CEO of Core Radio Group, expressed gratitude for the team’s dedication over the past four years. “There were a number of factors in the decision to discontinue in Chicago. However, I am very grateful to the commitment from the entire staff and the opportunity to serve our listeners and clients,” he stated .
While Streetz 95.1 is signing off in Chicago, the Streetz brand continues to thrive in other markets, including Atlanta, Albany GA, Charlotte, New Orleans, and Norfolk VA. Additionally, Core Radio Group operates R&B/Southern Soul station “87.7 The Vibe” WTBS-LD in Atlanta.
The departure of Streetz 95.1 marks the end of a unique chapter in Chicago’s radio landscape, leaving listeners to seek new avenues for hip-hop and R&B content
