A movement is underway to officially recognize August as Footwork Appreciation Month (F.A.M.) in Chicago and Cook County. Organized by Creative Netwerk and members of the Chicago Footwork community, this campaign is urging city and county officials to honor the month-long celebration that already holds deep cultural significance for many on the South and West Sides.
Footwork, a high-energy dance and music style born in Chicago, has grown into a global phenomenon—but it remains rooted in Black Chicago culture. Every August, the community comes together for battles, workshops, memorials, and gatherings to honor its pioneers and push the movement forward.
Now, supporters are asking local officials to match that dedication by making the celebration official. A petition is live to gather signatures from residents and allies who want to protect and uplift this important cultural tradition.
