Late Saturday night in Chicago’s Chatham neighborhood, what should’ve been a peaceful summer evening ended in tragedy.

According to CBS Chicago, three people were shot while standing near the 100 block of West 87th Street just before midnight on July 19. The shooter pulled up, opened fire, and left behind a devastating scene.
One of the victims, a 24-year-old man, was shot multiple times and didn’t make it. He was rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center but was later pronounced dead.

A 25-year-old woman was also shot in the head and is currently fighting for her life in critical condition. A second 24-year-old man was hit in the shoulder and taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital—his condition is reported as good.
At this time, no arrests have been made, and Area Two detectives are still investigating.

This shooting adds to a growing list of violent incidents hitting Chicago communities hard this summer. Just one night earlier, four others were shot—one fatally—at a separate South Side gathering, as reported by CBS Chicago.
Chatham is a tight-knit, historically Black neighborhood that’s seen its share of ups and downs. But moments like this cut deep. Residents continue to call for more resources, more accountability, and more support—especially for young people and families trying to feel safe outside their own homes.
