CHICAGO NATIVE J. IVY APPOINTED AS CO-CHAIR OF THE RECORDING ACADEMY’S BLACK MUSIC COLLECTIVE

J.IVY AND NEW YORK RAPPER TORAE APPOINTED INTO THE BLACK MUSIC ACADEMY

The Recording Academy has announced two fresh faces to lead its Black Music Collective (BMC): Grammy-winning poet J. Ivy and artist, songwriter, and media host Torae. The pair will succeed Dr. Chelsey Green and Rico Love, with their appointment officially revealed on August 25, 2025. Along with taking on these new roles, J. Ivy will continue to serve as Governor for the Academy’s Chicago Chapter, while Torae remains a National Trustee representing New York. Their mission will focus on amplifying the voices of Black artists and executives, strengthening education and wellness initiatives, and driving investment in HBCUs.

J. Ivy has long been recognized as a groundbreaking creative force who redefined how poetry fits into mainstream culture. A native of Chicago, he made history in 2023 as the first poet to win a Grammy for Best Spoken Word Poetry Album with The Poet Who Sat By The Door, later earning another Grammy in 2024 for The Light Inside. His career spans collaborations with icons like JAY-Z, John Legend, and Ray Charles, and his performances have lit up stages at the GRAMMY Awards Premiere Ceremony®, the United Nations, The White House, and major sporting events. Beyond the mic, his artistry extends to TV, film, advertising, and narration. With recognition from the NAACP Image Awards, Clio, Peabody, and Telly Awards, J. Ivy continues to be a cultural visionary whose words inspire on every stage.

Torae brings a multi-dimensional resume to the table as well. Known not only as a recording artist but also as a cultural leader, he has written songs that have landed on multi-platinum albums for Cardi B, BLACKPINK, Lizzo, and Migos, while also securing placements across top networks and brands. Fans also know him as the host of SiriusXM’s The Tor Guide and That Raw, and for his appearances with New York City FC and the Rock the Bells Cruise. Previously president of the Recording Academy’s New York Chapter, Torae has been a strong advocate for equity in the music industry and systemic reform. His influence stretches into acting, entrepreneurship, and philanthropy, making him a voice that resonates both on and off the stage.

With J. Ivy and Torae at the helm, the Black Music Collective is set to enter a new chapter, one that not only honors Black artistry but also pushes for deeper representation, resources, and lasting cultural impact.
