Creative Cypher just signed a multi-year licensing deal with AMC Networks for its new film Brand New—solidifying the Chicago-based collective as a major force in talent discovery and content innovation.
Creative Cypher Steps Into the Spotlight
What started as a grassroots movement to amplify overlooked creators is now a full-blown power shift. Chicago’s Creative Cypher, founded by Troy Osborne Pryor, has emerged as a cultural disruptor, echoing the golden age of Hollywood while rewriting its rules for a more inclusive era.
On September 10, AMC Networks inked a two-year licensing deal for Brand New, a gripping drama born out of Creative Cypher’s XL Fest pipeline. The move comes after five Cypher titles overperformed on AMC+ through TateMen Entertainment, proving their model doesn’t just work—it thrives.
“This isn’t just a film deal—it’s validation,” said Pryor. “We’re giving talented, overlooked creators the access and infrastructure they need to soar. AMC isn’t just licensing content—they’re investing in a movement.”
Brand New Brings Heavy Hitters
Written, directed, and edited by Quincy Ledbetter and Denzel Whitaker, Brand New stars Whitaker (The Great Debaters), Maestro Harrell (The Wire), and Kris D. Lofton (Power Book IV: Force). The story follows three estranged friends whose long-awaited reunion spirals into violence—testing loyalty, brotherhood, and survival in ways that can’t be undone.
The production team includes Yuki Maekawa-Ledbetter and Ramfis Myrthil, with cinematography by John Rosario. Already handpicked by Whoopi Goldberg for selection at Tribeca, the film is positioning itself as a breakout title.
AMC Partnership Goes Beyond One Film
The partnership isn’t stopping with Brand New. AMC is also backing a year-round talent scouting and development initiative alongside Creative Cypher and XL Fest. This includes:
A major industry panel at XL 25 this summer in Chicago An ongoing showcase of emerging filmmakers on AMC+ New content opportunities across AMC’s networks, from Shudder to SundanceTV
AMC praised the collaboration, saying Creative Cypher is delivering the “grassroots talent development the industry desperately needs.”
From Chicago to Hollywood, Together
The licensing deal was celebrated coast to coast: XL Fest kicked off in Chicago the same night Brand New premiered in LA with its film team. The city’s own GLC even surprised fans with a live performance during the Chicago launch.
For Pryor, a four-time Telly Award winner and former VP of SAG-AFTRA Chicago, this is more than a win for his team—it’s a win for Chicago creatives everywhere.
“Creative Cypher is no longer just a rising star,” he said. “We’re building a constellation.”
