When you hear the name Till, you know it carries the weight of history. Nearly 70 years after Emmett Till’s brutal murder shook this country and helped spark the Civil Rights Movement, his cousin, Priscilla Williams-Till, is stepping into the political arena. And she’s not stepping small. She just announced she’s running for the U.S. Senate in Mississippi.

Williams-Till, the founder of the Emmett Till Justice for Families Foundation, has made it clear that this campaign is about more than politics. It’s about carrying forward a legacy of justice, equity, and accountability that her family has been tied to since 1955. Her foundation has long worked to support families impacted by racial violence and injustice, and now she’s taking that fight to Washington.

She’s running as a Democrat, directly challenging Republican incumbent Cindy Hyde-Smith in the 2026 general election, set for November 3, 2026. Primaries are scheduled for March 10, 2026. That means Williams-Till has less than a year to build a movement strong enough to shake up Mississippi politics. And make no mistake—this won’t be an easy fight. Mississippi is a deep-red state, and Hyde-Smith has held her seat since 2018.

But the symbolism and significance of this run is undeniable. For a cousin of Emmett Till to enter a U.S. Senate race in the South, pledging to continue the fight for civil rights and social justice—that’s history meeting the present. It’s a reminder that the struggle for racial equality didn’t end with marches in the 1960s, and it certainly hasn’t ended today.

Williams-Till is betting that Mississippi voters—especially young people, Black communities, and those tired of business-as-usual politics—are ready for change. Her platform hasn’t been rolled out in full yet, but from her track record, we can expect a focus on justice reform, civil rights protections, and policies that speak directly to families who’ve felt ignored by the system.

As a Black woman running in Mississippi, she’s walking into a space where the challenges are steep. But she’s also carrying the power of her family’s story, one that shifted the conscience of America. That story still echoes today—through her work, through this campaign, and through a nation still grappling with the same questions of race, power, and justice.

Whether or not she wins, her candidacy is a powerful statement: the fight for justice is a generational one, and the Till family remains at the forefront of it.
