A tragic scene unfolded early Tuesday morning on Chicago’s South Side when a 44-year-old man died after forcing open the doors of a CTA Red Line train.
According to CBS News, the incident happened around 4:40 a.m. near the 79th Street station. Witnesses said the man pried open the doors while the train was in motion and jumped down onto the tracks. Moments later, he made contact with the electrified third rail and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Emergency crews and CTA personnel quickly responded, shutting off power and suspending Red Line service between 95th/Dan Ryan and Garfield stations while the investigation took place. Shuttle buses were provided to help riders navigate the morning commute.
The CTA restored service later in the morning, but not before heavy delays and confusion for early travelers.
