NORTH CAROLINA HIGH SCHOOL STAFF MISTAKES AUTISTIC STUDENT’S NINTENDO SWITCH FOR A WEAPON

Last week, a misunderstanding at Fort Dorchester High School sparked unnecessary alarm after staff reported that an autistic student may have been carrying a weapon or “switch.” When administrators investigated, they discovered the item in question was simply a Nintendo Switch gaming console.

According to Live 5 News, the concern began when someone overheard the word “switch” and assumed it referred to a weapon. The school immediately followed safety protocols, but the situation quickly de-escalated once the student’s backpack was checked.

Parents and advocates are now raising concerns about communication, training, and how situations involving neurodivergent students are handled. Many argue the incident highlights the need for better understanding and more careful responses to avoid stigmatizing or frightening vulnerable students.

No weapon was ever present, and the student was not found to have violated any school rules.
