Chicago is mourning the loss of Landon “DJ Commando” Wallace — a beloved DJ, radio personality, and cultural figure whose influence stretched far beyond the turntables. News of his passing surfaced on social media as his fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc, was celebrating Founders Day, adding another layer of heartbreak for many who knew and loved him.

DJ Commando’s journey began at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC), where he discovered his passion for DJing and launched what would become a celebrated career. During his time at SIUC, he also became a proud member of the Beta Eta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., forming bonds and building a foundation that would carry into his professional life and community impact.
His rise in Chicago’s music and media landscape was nothing short of influential. Commando became an official mixer for Power 92.3 Chicago, eventually holding a daily role on Maha’s Midday Show. As Power 92 shared in their official statement:
“Commando has been a long-standing presence on Power from his beginnings as a guest mixer to mixing daily during Maha’s Midday Show. He was a quiet force with a large presence who represented Power on stage at many concerts, van hits, station appearances and club nights.”
His talents extended far beyond radio. Commando was also one of the official DJs for the Chicago Bulls, the official DJ for Northwestern University, a radio personality for DTLR Radio, and worked with institutions such as Notre Dame, among many others. His sound, energy, and professionalism made him a fixture in both entertainment and sports across the Midwest.
While the news of his passing spread quickly online, his family released a statement asking the community for space to grieve:
“It is with great sadness that we inform you all of his passing. As we know so many people love him, will miss him, and have questions at this time, we ask that you all please give us privacy and time to process a loss of this magnitude.”
At this time, no official cause of death has been released. Friends, colleagues, fraternity brothers, fans, and the broader Chicago community continue to share memories, tributes, and messages of love — a reflection of how deeply DJ Commando’s presence was felt.

Power 92 confirmed that they would be airing a special tribute beginning at 10 a.m., honoring his life, legacy, and lasting imprint on Chicago’s culture.
As the city processes this loss, we ask that you keep Landon’s family, friends, fraternity brothers, and loved ones in your prayers during this difficult time. DJ Commando’s influence, kindness, and contribution to Chicago’s soundscape will never be forgotten.
Rest in power, Landon Wallace — a true embodiment of Chicago’s rhythm and spirit.
