Chicago book lovers are in for a major treat. Barnes & Noble is preparing to open what will be one of its largest Chicago-area stores this summer, marking a big return to downtown retail and a renewed investment in brick-and-mortar bookstores.
According to CBS Chicago, the massive new location will open at 150 N. State Street in the Loop, taking over the former Old Navy space. Spanning roughly 30,000 square feet across multiple levels, the store is expected to become a flagship destination for readers, students, and tourists alike.
According to the company, the State Street location will feature an expansive book selection, comfortable seating areas, and a full Barnes & Noble Café, creating a community-centered space for browsing, studying, and literary events. The opening is part of Barnes & Noble’s broader comeback strategy, which focuses on larger, more engaging stores tailored to local communities.
The downtown opening is just one piece of the company’s Chicago-area growth. Barnes & Noble also plans to:
– Open a Hyde Park location near the University of Chicago in early 2026
– Launch a new Oak Park store later this spring
– Relocate and expand its store at Westfield Old Orchard Mall in Skokie
The expansion reflects a shift in consumer demand, as more readers return to physical bookstores for curated selections and in-person experiences.
