A deadly crash unfolded in Romeoville after a speeding car went airborne and landed on northbound Interstate 55, killing the driver, who authorities identified as Jonathan Wenzel.
According to investigators, Wenzel was driving at a high rate of speed on a roadway near the interstate when his vehicle lost control, became airborne, and crashed down onto I-55. After the impact, two vehicles traveling northbound were unable to stop and struck Wenzel, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
One of the drivers involved in the secondary crashes was transported to a local hospital and later airlifted to the University of Chicago Medical Center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, officials said. No other serious injuries were reported.
The crash scattered debris across multiple lanes and forced authorities to shut down portions of the interstate for several hours as emergency crews and Illinois State Police investigated.
