A new investigation shows that Chicago city employees and workers at related agencies owe more than $23 million in unpaid debt to the city. According to CBS News, the money comes from overdue parking tickets, traffic camera fines, utility bills, and other city fees.
Here’s who owes what:
– Chicago Board of Education employees: nearly $10 million, the largest share
– Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) workers: close to $9 million
– Department of Water Management employees: about $312,000, including unpaid water bills
– Other city departments and agencies: millions more tied to traffic and administrative fines
In total, roughly 13,000 current and former employees are listed as owing money to the city.
The findings have sparked criticism as Chicago faces ongoing budget challenges. Many residents are questioning why unpaid debts — especially from city workers — were allowed to accumulate while the city searches for new revenue sources.
