A routine ride home turned violent for an international student riding Chicago’s CTA Red Line early Sunday morning, according to NBC Chicago. Shubham Patil, a cybersecurity student at Roosevelt University, says he was attacked and robbed by another passenger after being followed onto the train.
According to Patil, someone pressed the onboard “help” button during the assault, but the train operator told him to move to another car. The attack continued until Patil exited the train and was able to call 911. Police later responded, but no arrests have been announced.
The incident left Patil shaken and reconsidering his future in Chicago, saying he no longer feels safe using public transit. CTA officials say the operator did request police assistance and officers arrived within minutes, but the situation highlights the gap riders sometimes feel between safety protocols and real-time protection.
