DESCENDANTS OF SLAVES IN CHICAGO SHOULD HAVE PROPERTY TAXES WAIVED

Group pushing for all descendants of slaves in Chicago to have property taxes waived

There is a group in Chicago that is advocating for the waiver of property taxes for all descendants of slaves in the city.

According to activists, slavery deprived Black people of their ability to create wealth across generations, and therefore reparations are necessary to address this injustice.

The founder of the Reconstruction Era Reparations Act Now (RERAN), Howard Ray Jr., has stated that the movement for reparations is aimed at the descendants of slaves. Ray’s team argues that slavery stripped Black people of the ability to create generational wealth, and this reality is still being felt by many in Chicago today.

RERAN organizers said they need 400,000 signatures to support their referendum by May 6.
