CHICAGO CHURCHES DISTRIBUTES 40,000 EGGS TO FAMILIES IN NEED

Pastor Charlie Dates, the Senior Pastor of Salem Baptist Church in Chicago, is stepping up to support families facing rising grocery costs. He has led the distribution of 40,000 eggs across the city to provide immediate relief, rather than waiting for government assistance. “The President promised that prices would drop on day one, but instead, they have only soared. We’re not waiting on him or anyone else to fix this,” Pastor Dates stated in an interview with the Chicago Defender. “The Black church has always stood in the gap for Black families, ensuring they have what they need to thrive. We did it before, and we’re doing it now.”

The giveaway is being organized as egg prices remain high, largely due to the ongoing bird flu crisis. This situation has made it increasingly difficult for many households to afford basic groceries. Pastor Dates aims to offer much-needed relief to those struggling with rising food costs through this effort.

Before the distribution, volunteers gathered at the House of Hope in Chicago on March 14 to sort and prepare the eggs. They worked in shifts from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and the event was open for live coverage.

Pastor Dates has a long history of serving his community. In 2011, he became the youngest senior pastor at his church, where he led efforts to support Black families. In 2023, he took on a leadership role at another church, furthering his mission of community service.
