TIKTOK’S STILL FUTURE HANGING IN THE BALANCE: WHAT WE NEED TO KNOW

170 million U.S. users. A new law. Court battles on deck. TikTok’s future is on the line—and it could change the way Chicago creators and small businesses hustle online. Read the blog for the breakdown

BIG PICTURE MOVES

  • The U.S. and China reached a framework agreement: that means TikTok’s U.S. operations are being spun off into a mostly U.S.-controlled entity. ByteDance (TikTok’s Chinese owner) keeps a minority stake.
  • Oracle is in the mix — they, along with private equity firms, may be part of the group acquiring control.
  • A deadline of September 17 had been set for ByteDance to divest or risk a ban under U.S. law. That deadline was extended — the process still ongoing.

USER STATS & DEMOGRAPHICS

  • About 170 million people use TikTok in the U.S.
  • Globally, adult reach is up around 1.94 billion
  • U.S. users age-25-34 are now the single largest user group — it’s not just teens anymore.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR CREATORS / USERS

  • Creators might need to adapt: new ownership could mean changes to how algorithm works, data is handled, and how content is moderated.
  • Everything about TikTok’s future in the U.S. feels up in the air — legal oversight, transparency, maybe even changes to features.
  • For users: likely nothing immediate changes on the surface (still scrolling, still creating), but behind the scenes there are shifts that could impact what content shows up, how much say creators have, and who controls what.

WHY WE SHOULD CARE

  • This isn’t just tech-news. It’s about who gets to control our feeds, our voices, and what we see every single day.
  • For Black creators, people of color, everyday users — changes in policy and ownership could shift visibility, earnings, or even who gets censored or amplified.
  • Understanding these moves now means you can decide where to invest your time, how to adapt, and whether you trust the platform for your creative future.
