A brief Grammys mix-up turned into a moment of grace thanks to SZA.
While presenting Record of the Year, Cher accidentally announced “Luther Vandross” instead of the winning song “Luther” by Kendrick Lamar and SZA. The moment quickly went viral, but SZA shut down any backlash.
Speaking after the show, SZA explained that the confusion made sense — the song “Luther” is heavily inspired by the late R&B legend. “She’s not wrong,” SZA said, noting that the song exists on the same musical frequency as Vandross’ work.
SZA also praised Cher, calling her a “queen” and expressing gratitude for the artists who paved the way. What could’ve been an awkward awards-show moment instead became a reminder of music’s shared legacy — past and present.
