Chicago baseball history is about to be made.

This spring, Wrigley Field will host the first-ever Chicago HBCU Baseball Classic, bringing Historically Black Colleges and Universities to one of Major League Baseball’s most iconic stadiums.

The historic event is scheduled for May 2, 2026, and will take place after the Chicago Cubs play their home game earlier that day. Fans will then get the opportunity to watch two powerhouse HBCU programs — Prairie View A&M University and Alabama A&M University — face off on the same field that has hosted generations of baseball legends.

Organizers say the Classic is about more than just the game. According to WGN News, the event will celebrate HBCU culture with marching band performances, community engagement activities, and youth-focused programming. Much like traditional HBCU football classics, the baseball edition aims to blend athletics with culture, pride, and legacy.

Hosting the matchup at Wrigley Field carries deep symbolism. The ballpark is one of the most historic venues in professional sports and has seen some of the greatest moments in baseball history — including appearances by trailblazers like Jackie Robinson. Bringing HBCU athletes to this stage reflects continued efforts to grow diversity and visibility within the sport.

Tickets for the Chicago HBCU Baseball Classic will be free, though reservations will be required. Organizers expect strong interest as Chicago sports fans and alumni from across the country gather for what promises to be a milestone moment.

For one afternoon, the Friendly Confines will become a celebration of history, culture, and the future of HBCU baseball.
