A Chicago woman who was eight months pregnant when she fatally stabbed her boyfriend during an alleged domestic dispute is now at the center of a growing movement calling for murder charges against her to be dropped.

Keshia Golden is facing first-degree murder charges in connection with the death of her boyfriend, Calvin Sidney, following an altercation that reportedly took place shortly after the couple’s baby shower in October 2022, according to ABC Chicago.

According to reports, the situation escalated inside the home when Golden and Sidney began arguing. Golden’s legal team claims the dispute turned violent, alleging that Sidney attacked her, grabbed her by the hair, and slammed her head into a counter while she was heavily pregnant. Fearing for her life and the safety of her unborn child, Golden allegedly grabbed a knife and stabbed Sidney in the leg.

Authorities say the stabbing struck Sidney’s femoral artery, causing severe bleeding. He was transported to a hospital but later died from his injuries.

Golden’s attorneys argue that she acted in self-defense, stating that she was trying to protect herself and her unborn baby during a violent attack. Supporters have rallied behind her case, organizing demonstrations and calling on prosecutors to drop the murder charge. Many advocates believe the case highlights the difficult choices victims of domestic violence may face when defending themselves.

Prosecutors, however, have continued to pursue the case, charging Golden with first-degree murder. Reports indicate that a plea deal offering a lesser charge was previously presented but declined, as it would still leave Golden with a serious felony conviction.

Since the incident, Golden has given birth and is raising her child while awaiting trial. As the case moves forward, it continues to spark debate about self-defense laws, domestic violence, and how the legal system handles cases involving pregnant women protecting themselves.

She is due back in court for a status hearing on July 13th.
