Officials have released body camera footage revealing the events leading up to Deputy Sean Grayson shooting and killing 36-year-old Sonya Massey after she called the police for help.

On July 6th, Sonya Massey called 911 because she thought there was a “prowler” at her home in Springfield. In the video footage, Deputy Grayson and a partner arrived at the home just after midnight, looked around the house, and then entered.

As the police enter the home, they calmly talk to Massey. She then goes over to the stove, turns off the pot, and picks it up.

Grayson demanded her to put the pot down, but instead she responded, “I rebuke you in the name of Jesus.”

“Huh?” the deputy says.

“I rebuke you in the name of Jesus,” she repeats.

Massey does not approach the deputies with the pot and stays in her kitchen.

After yelling that she would get shot in the face if she didn’t put the pot down, that’s when he shoots at her 3 times.

When the paramedics and other officers arrived, one of them asked, “Where’s the gun?” Grayson responded that Massey had a pot of boiling water and had threatened to rebuke him in the name of Jesus. Paramedics took her to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Grayson was charged last week with first-degree murder, aggravated battery and official misconduct, and he entered a plea of not guilty.
