A police officer in Chicago has been shot in the 5600 block of South Shields Avenue in Englewood, according to Chicago police officials who spoke with ABC7.
The officer sustained a gunshot wound to the knee and was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in a CPD squad car, officials said. The officer’s condition is currently unknown.
According to ABC7, the suspect was also shot in the incident, sustaining a gunshot wound to the groin. The individual was taken to another hospital, and their condition is also unknown at this time.
Chicago Police Department leadership, along with other officers, were present at the UChicago hospital, where the injured CPD officer is receiving treatment. ABC7 was informed that Mayor Brandon Johnson was en route to the hospital.
CPD officials are expected to provide an update at the hospital later today.
It remains unclear at this time who discharged firearms during the incident and the specific circumstances surrounding the shooting.
UPDATE: A 16-year old is now in custody following the shooting of a Chicago Police Officer. Neither the officer nor the teen fired any shots deliberately.
