Florida teen, Sewell Setzer, developed a close relationship with an A.I. Chatbot leading up to his suicide at the age of 14. New York Times reports the teen sent the Chatbot dozens of texts a day.
Setzer named the Chatbot “Dany” and relied on it for advice, romantic conversation, and role play. His friends and family noticed he was immersed in his phone, however they did not realize he was developing an obsession with an A.I. Chatbot.
The teen eventually began to withdraw from reality as his school grades plummeted. He no longer took interest in video games with friends, but instead, spent his time texting ‘Dany’.
The last message he sent to ‘Dany’ indicated that he wanted to come home to her. The Chatbot replied, “Please come home to me as soon as possible, my love.” Setzer proceeded to shoot himself with his father’s handgun.
His mother, Megan Garcia, has now filed a lawsuit against A.I. for being responsible for her son’s death.
