OSCARS WEEKEND TOWING LEAVES RESIDENTS PAYING $409 TO GET CARS BACK

Residents and workers in Hollywood were left searching for their vehicles Sunday after dozens of cars were towed from streets near the venue of the Academy Awards, according to Fox 11 LA.

The towing took place in the area surrounding the Dolby Theatre, where the Oscars ceremony is traditionally held each year. Streets throughout the neighborhood were cleared to prepare for the high-profile event, which brings heavy security, red carpet installations, and large television production crews.

According to reports from people in the area, tow trucks began removing vehicles early Sunday morning from streets several blocks away from the theater. Some residents said they were surprised to find their cars missing when they stepped outside, later discovering they had been impounded.

Drivers who located their vehicles at city impound lots were required to pay a $409 release fee to retrieve them.

Many locals said the situation caused confusion and frustration. Several residents claimed temporary parking restriction signs were unclear or appeared to conflict with normal parking rules. Others said they had not realized streets would be cleared so far from the main venue.

City officials say towing is part of routine preparations for major events such as the Academy Awards. Streets are often closed or converted into no-parking zones days before the ceremony to accommodate security, road closures, and event infrastructure.

The Los Angeles Department of Transportation says temporary “No Parking” signs are typically posted at least 48 hours in advance when vehicles must be removed for permitted events. Event organizers and permit holders are also responsible for notifying residents about restrictions.

Still, residents affected by the towing say the process left many scrambling to track down their cars while facing costly fees to get them back.

Drivers who believe their vehicles were towed improperly can request a hearing with the city to challenge the citation and towing fees.
