According to Abc7 news, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson announced on Saturday that, upon the request of the officer’s family, he would not be attending the funeral for fallen CPD Officer Enrique Martinez.
Johnson issued a statement on Saturday afternoon, expressing that, “I heard from the family and am honoring their request and will no longer plan to attend the honors funeral services. This has been an emotional two weeks for the loved ones of Officer Martinez, the Chicago Police Department, and the city of Chicago. We all want to do right by Officer Martinez and give his family and the CPD family space to grieve. The focus must remain on Officer Martinez, his loved ones, and the CPD as our city continues to honor his ultimate sacrifice and legacy of service.”
Johnson had earlier stated his intention to go to the funeral for Martinez, who was fatally shot on November 4 during a traffic stop close to 80th and Ingleside, even though the Fraternal Order of Police indicated that the officer’s family does not wish for the Chicago mayor or Illinois Governor JB Pritzker to attend.
Mayor Brandon Johnson intended to attend the officer’s funeral, but the family expressed disdain towards his presence.
