On Sunday, May 4, 2025, the Homewood-Flossmoor High School community was shaken by the tragic loss of senior Tom’Mya Lyons, who died in a car crash just hours after attending her prom.
According to CBS News, the single-vehicle accident occurred around 4:30 a.m. on the Sibley Boulevard ramp to northbound I-94 in Calumet City. Lyons, 18, was a passenger in the vehicle and was ejected during the crash. She was transported to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The driver, a 16-year-old male from Riverdale, was not injured.
Just hours before the accident, Lyons had attended Homewood-Flossmoor High School’s prom, themed “A Night of Enchanted Elegance,” held at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. Photos from the event show her radiant in a sequined blue dress, smiling as she celebrated with friends.
The school has made grief counseling services available to students and staff, with crisis team members present in classrooms and designated spaces on campus.
As the Homewood-Flossmoor community mourns this profound loss, they remember Tom’Mya Lyons as a vibrant young woman whose life was tragically cut short.
