HARVEY, ILLINOIS RESIDENTS SEEK INVESTIGATION INTO MAYOR’S OFFICE AFTER ALDERWOMAN ARRESTED FOR SPEAKING UP FOR COMMUNITY

Things got real tense in Harvey, Illinois, after a city council meeting took a wild turn and ended with Alderwoman Colby Chapman being arrested — right in the middle of the session. Now, residents are speaking out and demanding a deeper investigation into how Mayor Christopher Clark is running the show.

According to ABC7 Chicago, it all went down on April 28 during a council meeting where Chapman was trying to speak up for a resident. Things escalated quickly when police officers tried to take her materials, and city officials say she got physical — allegedly hitting one of the officers. Chapman says that’s not what happened and insists she was just advocating for her community. She’s now facing charges for battery, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest.

The arrest didn’t sit well with folks in Harvey. At the next city council meeting, residents showed up and showed out — calling out what they say is a pattern of shady behavior and lack of transparency from the mayor’s office. They’re fed up with rising costs on everything from water bills and property taxes to housing inspections and business licenses. Chapman has been vocal about these issues too, saying the city is moving in the wrong direction when it comes to how they treat the public.

Mayor Clark, on the other hand, says he’s just trying to maintain order. He claims Chapman was disruptive and says that the procedures followed during the arrest were by the book. He also mentioned that he’s already reached out to state and federal agencies to review how things are being run in the city — though many residents aren’t convinced that’s enough.

With all eyes now on Harvey, it’s clear this situation has struck a nerve. Whether it leads to real change or just more political drama is still up in the air, but one thing’s for sure: the people are watching.

So here we go again, after just towing my car at last Mondays city council meeting stating that I abandoned it on private property, how is the municipal building private property?
• ••
Today a 7 day notice police tow, warning notice, for parking in the abandoned driveway, next door to me, the same one our family has parked in for 15+ years.
Yet that same abandoned home has sat vacant for 15+ years, where two dead bodies were found, along with 4,000+ abandoned/blighted properties, across Harvey.
The time spent antagonizing me and my family, and using tax payers dollars to send police officers to our home to ticket my car and attach a warning tow notice could actually be spent increasing public safety!
The bully behavior is disgusting!

I am a Black woman. A servant leader. An advocate for the disenfranchised…And I am TIRED—tired of watching vulnerable communities be dismissed, and Black people disrespected without consequence. This isn’t just policy failure—it’s a moral one. And we will not be silent.
Colby Chapman we have your back! ✊🏽
Such an injustice The City of Harvey!
