CHICAGO MAYOR BRANDON JOHNSON WILL NOT INCLUDE PROPERTY TAX HIKE IN BUDGET

Mayor Brandon Johnson recently spoke to the media for the first time since revealing that he would not be recommending a property tax hike for Chicago homeowners in the upcoming year. During his segment on WGN Morning News, Johnson indicated that he is looking for alternative progressive revenue sources to address the city’s significant $1.2 billion budget shortfall.

In the previous year, he suggested a considerable $300 million rise in property taxes, believing it was essential to fulfill a campaign promise to avoid drastic cuts to city services and employment. However, this suggestion was turned down by the city council. As he outlines his revised strategy, there is still uncertainty regarding where the needed funds will originate to maintain city operations in 2026, particularly given that property taxes are one of the main revenue sources for the city.
