COMMON SAYS HBCU’S HELPED HIM EMBRACE HIS BLACKNESS ON A DEEPER LEVEL

In a recent interview with Spiritual World, Common opened up about the profound impact historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have had on his life—particularly his time at Florida A&M University.

For Common, the experience went far beyond academics. While he didn’t attend for a traditional path to a degree, being immersed in the culture and environment of an HBCU helped reshape how he views himself and his Blackness. He described it as a deeper awakening—one rooted in community, pride, and a stronger connection to Black identity.

HBCUs have long stood as pillars of empowerment, producing generations of leaders, artists, and thinkers despite systemic challenges. In his interview, Common emphasized how these institutions create spaces where Black identity is not only accepted but celebrated. That cultural affirmation, he explained, helped him see himself more clearly and more fully.

HBCUs like Florida A&M have long been pillars of cultural affirmation and excellence. For Common, being surrounded by Black students, thinkers, and creatives created a space where he felt seen and inspired. That environment, he suggests, played a key role in expanding his perspective—not just as an artist, but as a man navigating his identity.

His reflections highlight something many HBCU students and alumni often express: the value of these institutions can’t be measured solely by degrees. Instead, it’s found in the confidence, cultural awareness, and sense of belonging they cultivate.

Common made it clear that his connection to HBCUs is lasting. The lessons he gained continue to influence his work, his mindset, and how he moves through the world today.

Ultimately, his message reinforces a powerful idea—HBCUs don’t just educate, they transform. And for Common, that transformation shaped how he understands himself in ways that go far deeper than the classroom.
