On July 26, 2025, a 42-year-old Michigan man carried out a random stabbing attack inside a Walmart in Traverse City, injuring 11 people — including both shoppers and employees.
The attack began near the checkout area just before 5 p.m. Witnesses described scenes of panic before bystanders and a sheriff’s deputy subdued the suspect. He was arrested on-site and is currently in custody.
According to Munson Healthcare, six victims are in critical condition, and five are in serious condition. Several are undergoing surgery.
Law enforcement believes the attack was unprovoked and that the suspect acted alone. His identity has not been released, and a motive is still unknown. The FBI is assisting with the investigation.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer and local officials have expressed support for the victims. The Walmart remains temporarily closed as the investigation continues.
