A man from Chicago has been handed a prison sentence of over 16 years for illegally trafficking in firearms. Johnathan Burgos, 33, sold 14 firearms and several large-capacity magazines between 2020 and 2021 to an individual who was secretly working with the FBI. The transactions included several stolen handguns, a weapon with an altered serial number, and a rifle. Notably, during most of these illegal sales, Burgos was under electronic monitoring while on parole or bond related to previous firearm charges in state court.
Earlier this year, Burgos pleaded guilty to federal firearm offenses. On August 15, 2025, U.S. District Judge Steven C. Seeger sentenced him to 16 years and eight months in federal prison. The sentencing was announced by Andrew S. Boutros, the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois; Douglas S. DePodesta, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Chicago Field Office; and Larry Snelling, Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department.
