A shooting occurred today at Evergreen High School in Evergreen, Colorado, where officials were alerted about a shooting around 12:24 p.m. local time.
At least four students were taken to the hospital after the shooting unfolded on Wednesday afternoon.
According to reports three students were in critical condition and transported to St. Anthony Hospital. The fourth student sustained injuries while escaping to a nearby elementary school.
Investigators believe the shooter, who was a student at the school, was also among those injured and hospitalized.
CommonSpirit St. Anthony Hospital confirmed the death of one student but would not share any details about the student’s death, spokesperson Lindsay Radford said.
The student suspect used a handgun during the attack according to law enforcement officials.
Jacki Kelley, spokesperson for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, described the incident as: “This is the scariest thing you could ever think could happen.” She added that she didn’t know if the suspect was old enough to drive.
Kelley also said she did not know how the suspect sustained their injuries but she did not believe law enforcement fired any rounds.
Governor Jared Polis expressed his support and concern, stating authorities must ensure students can attend school safely and without fear.
Parents were alerted to reunite with students at Bergen Meadow Elementary.
