In a recent interview on the “We Sound Crazy!” podcast, Da Brat emphasized the significance of wordplay in her rapping. Co-host Claude Kelly shared his thoughts on her 1994 single “Funkdafied,” explaining that it was at that moment he recognized she was serious about her craft.

She explained that “Funkdafied” was not the entirety of her identity as a rapper, noting that it was a slower track. Da Brat mentioned that she identified more with Twista’s style of rapping because he was an influence during her upbringing.

“I’m from Chicago where Twister was king. So that is who l looked up to and wanted to be like and I had that in me all the time cuz that’s what I grew up doing. Everybody in Chicago wanted to be like Twister. He was the king. Twist is the king of Chicago,” said Da Brat.

Da Brat explains why Twista is the “King” of Chicago, highlighting that not only can he rap fast, but he is also articulate and that Chicago wanted to be like him. She says although a lot of people can rap fast, it’s nothing like Twista’s.
