Chicago police are investigating a disturbing discovery after human remains were found inside a suitcase along the canal in the city’s Little Village neighborhood Friday afternoon.
According to authorities, officers responded to the 3500 block of South Kedzie Avenue around midday after reports of a suspicious item near the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal. When investigators arrived, they found a suitcase containing what appeared to be human remains.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office has taken custody of the remains and will conduct an autopsy to determine the person’s identity and cause of death. Police say the remains are believed to belong to a man, though few other details have been released.
The area near the Kedzie Avenue bridge was blocked off for hours as detectives processed the scene and collected evidence. Witnesses described seeing a green suitcase partially submerged near the edge of the canal before police arrived.
As of Friday night, no suspects have been identified, and the circumstances surrounding how the suitcase ended up at the canal remain under investigation.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact Chicago police or submit an anonymous tip to CPD’s tip line.
