A group of Chicago firefighters found themselves in a dangerous and unexpected situation after responding to what should’ve been a routine medical call — and instead were allegedly held at gunpoint, according to city officials.

The incident happened early Monday near 2800 block of N. Pulaski Road, where firefighters were assisting on a medical emergency when several suspects reportedly approached and attempted to steal their vehicle. According to Alderwoman Emma Mitts, the offenders pulled a gun on the crew and ordered them out of the fire truck. The firefighters complied, and the suspects ultimately ran off after failing to get control of the vehicle.
The details were first reported by WGN News, who noted the alderwoman’s growing concerns about rising crimes targeting first responders. FOX 32 Chicago also confirmed that the Chicago Fire Department and police are actively investigating the attempted car theft and armed threat.

CFD officials say the incident is part of a troubling trend, emphasizing that crews who show up to save lives should never be forced to fear for their own. The department says additional safety measures and precautions may be considered moving forward.
