A shocking daylight shooting unfolded on Chicago’s South Side Wednesday afternoon, leaving 1 woman dead and a man injured while a baby sat in the back seat. The incident took place in the 7900-block of South May Street in Gresham, sending shockwaves through the community.

According to the Chicago Police, a 26-year-old woman, identified as Gabryel Ayres a.k.a. “Gabby,” was shot multiple times and was pronounced dead at Little Company of Mary Hospital. A 27-year-old man was also shot twice and is being treated in good condition at another hospital, according to CBS Chicago. Miraculously, the child in the car was unharmed, despite being in the immediate line of fire.
Authorities say the vehicle crashed into a van following the shooting, and the investigation is ongoing. No arrests have been made at this time.
This incident comes amid growing concerns about gun violence in Chicago, especially in residential areas where innocent bystanders, including children, are at risk. Community leaders are urging heightened awareness and preventive measures, emphasizing that no one should have to worry about being caught in the crossfire while simply going about their day.

Residents expressed shock over the brazen nature of the attack. “It’s terrifying that this can happen in broad daylight,” one local said. “And a baby was in the car—thankfully, the child is okay, but it’s a tragedy waiting to happen.”
