Charlamagne Tha God is questioning the direction of podcasting, arguing that the rise of celebrity-led shows has stripped the medium of its originality and edge.
Speaking on Earn Your Leisure, the Breakfast Club co-host said podcasting once rewarded authenticity, risk-taking, and hard-earned audiences. As celebrities entered the space with built-in followings and major backing, he believes the focus shifted from craft to visibility.
According to Charlamagne, many celebrity podcasts feel more like brand extensions than platforms for honest, uncomfortable conversations — a shift driven less by creators and more by industry incentives. Networks and advertisers, he noted, now prioritize recognizable names over distinctive voices, flattening the cultural impact of the medium.
He also pointed to the effect on independent creators, who helped build podcasting’s foundation but now compete with celebrities who arrive with resources and institutional support.
While Charlamagne acknowledged that celebrity podcasts brought money and mainstream attention to the industry, his warning was clear: numbers don’t equal influence. Without risk, curiosity, and depth, he suggested, podcasting risks losing what made it powerful in the first place.
