A Florida man was arrested after deputies say he was caught driving in reverse down a busy roadway, claiming his car had a mechanical issue, according to NBC Chicago.
According to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, 47-year-old William Murphy III of Palm Coast was spotted traveling backward along State Road 100, prompting multiple calls from concerned witnesses.
Authorities tracked the vehicle to a parking lot, where the driver eventually turned the car around and shifted back into drive.
When questioned, Murphy told deputies his car was experiencing problems and said he believed the “best option” was to drive in reverse to an auto parts store.
However, deputies noted that the supposed mechanical issue appeared to disappear once law enforcement got behind him.
Murphy was arrested and charged with habitual driving with a suspended or revoked license, with officials noting he had more than 10 prior related convictions.
Murphy was transported to the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility and later released on $1,000 bond.
