ARKANSAS EMPLOYEE PAID $1,650 HOURLY BY MISTAKE NOW FACING FELONY CHARGE

An Arkansas woman is facing felony charges after police say she refused to return nearly $20,000 that was mistakenly paid to her due to a payroll error, according to K8 News.

According to authorities, 50-year-old Rene Nichole Coleman of Jonesboro, Arkansas, was arrested after allegedly keeping $19,388 that her employer accidentally paid her. Investigators said Coleman normally earned $16.50 per hour, but a payroll system mistake increased her pay rate to $1,650 per hour during a 12-hour shift in May 2025. The error resulted in her receiving thousands of dollars more than she was supposed to be paid.

Police said the company quickly realized the mistake and contacted Coleman, asking her to return the money. However, according to court documents, she refused to repay the funds even after being notified of the error. Investigators also reported that Coleman agreed to speak with police about the situation but failed to show up for questioning, which led authorities to issue a warrant for her arrest.

Coleman was eventually taken into custody on April 6, 2026, and charged with theft of property valued between $5,000 and $25,000, a Class C felony under Arkansas law. A judge set her bond at $15,000, and she is scheduled to appear in court for arraignment on May 18th.

The unusual case has sparked widespread discussion online, with many debating whether keeping money from an employer’s mistake should be treated as theft. Legal experts note that once an employee is notified of an overpayment, refusing to return the funds can be considered intentional theft.

As the case moves forward, it serves as a reminder that payroll mistakes, while rare, can lead to serious legal consequences if not handled properly. Authorities continue to stress that knowingly keeping money that does not belong to you can result in criminal charges, even when the original error was made by the employer.
