- So when you started your music journey, where was your confidence level?
- My confidence level was actually quite high. I always believed I could do music successfully, and it just got stronger over time.
- Who was your biggest inspiration while growing up?
- While growing up, J. Cole. Once I got older, it was Jay-Z.
- Did you ever want to give up in the process?
- No, I always believed I would be successful.
- What would you say is something you need to work on as an artist?
- Thinking outside the box more. I want to try things I’m not good at, whether that’s singing or experimenting with records outside my comfort zone.
- At what point did you decide to take your musical career seriously?
- I started writing around fourth or fifth grade, but I took it seriously around age 13.
- Where do you see yourself in the future?
- Doing music full time, touring, and branching out into brand creation, business, and tech, while solidifying music as a central part of my career.
- Are you seeking to secure a record deal or would you like to remain independent, and why?
- It depends on the terms. I’m business-minded, so I would consider a deal if it makes sense financially, rather than taking nothing.
- What was the process of creating your last project?
- The last project, Domino, was my longest project. It started as a joint project with Galaxy, then I repurposed old songs and crafted it into its final form. It was long and stressful, though I loved the outcome.
- What are your favorite visuals that you have created and why do you like them?
- The video Talk, from 3–4 years ago, was my first time acting and performing scenes, which was exciting. My most recent visual, Gone, is also a favorite.
- What is the highlighting moment in your career that encourages you to do music?
- Receiving a DM from J Electronica encouraging me after going through my freestyles. Knowing someone of his caliber believed in me was huge.
- Do you write your own music?
- Absolutely.
- Do you think having a ghostwriter is beneficial to artists?
- Yes, many artists can benefit from it. Not everyone can do everything, writing melodies or hooks is sometimes better with collaboration.
- Would you be interested in collaborating, and if so, who?
- Outside of Chicago, Kelani, Doja Cat, Jack Harlow, and Russ.
- Are there any specific Chicago artists that you would like to work with?
- Chance, Saba, and Vic Mensa. I’m actually seeing Vic in a few weeks for a project and will discuss collaborating.
- What is your favorite thing about being an artist?
- The freedom and creativity to express myself fully and tell my story without restrictions.
- What’s an exclusive fun fact about you?
- I play the violin really well, though I haven’t played in the last 10 years. I’m confident I could pick it back up.
- What is your guilty pleasure?
- Candy, I have a real sweet tooth, which has given me plenty of cavities.
- What never fails to make you smile?
- Seeing the people I love, like my mom and sister, happy and smiling.
