Q: Chicago has a sound like nowhere else. How has the city shaped who you are as an artist?

Lil 2 Posh: I’d say in several ways. From the culture to the music, Chicago has definitely shaped my sound. Growing up listening to everything that was coming out in the early and mid-2010s, especially drill music, inspired me a lot. That’s where a lot of my influence comes from.

Q: Was there ever a moment you almost walked away from music? If so, what kept you going?

Lil 2 Posh: Definitely a couple of times. I never wanted to quit rapping, but balancing school and music was tough. I recently graduated, so there were times when I didn’t want to deal with school or music.

Q: What was the process of creating your latest project?

Lil 2 Posh: My latest project, Graduation Tape, just dropped. The whole concept was built around sampling Kanye West’s first three albums. We went through those albums, found samples, and built the project from there.

Most of the process was me jumping into the studio. Whether it was my home studio or a professional studio, I freestyled over the beats until everything came together.

Q: Which visual you’ve created hits different every time you watch it back, and why?

Lil 2 Posh: I’d say my videos for “Ballin Freestyle” and “Do Your Dance.” The editing really captured the old-school aesthetic we were going for.

Every time I watch those videos back, whether it’s on Instagram or in my camera roll, I remember how special that moment was. They always motivate me to keep going.

Q: If someone had never heard your music before, what song would you play them first, and why?

Lil 2 Posh: I’d probably play my latest single, “Bullets.” The beat is really open, so it gives people room to hear my voice and understand how I’m coming as an artist.

Q: What’s one thing you know you still need to level up on as an artist?

Lil 2 Posh: Just creating more music. I want to make around 300 songs in a month. Right now, I probably make about 100, but I always want to push myself to create even more.

Q: Are you seeking to secure a record deal, or do you want to remain independent?

Lil 2 Posh: Right now, I’d rather stay independent. I’m open to hearing what labels have to offer, but I enjoy having creative control. I like being able to release what I want, when I want, and make my own decisions.

Q: What is something the industry doesn’t tell you about being an independent artist?

Lil 2 Posh: They don’t tell you how hard it is to get media coverage and promotion. A lot of it comes down to promotion, and when you’re independent, it’s mostly on you to get your music in front of people.

Q: Who in Chicago do you think is slept on right now and deserves more flowers?

Lil 2 Posh: I’d say Kio Racks. He’s definitely somebody people should be paying more attention to.

Q: Where do you see yourself in the next five years?

Lil 2 Posh: I see myself having perfected my craft, not just making music, but promoting it too. I believe my fan base will be much bigger by then, and everything will come more naturally.

More than anything, I see myself being at peace with myself and with everything around me.

Q: Give us something nobody really knows about you.

Lil 2 Posh: I play a lot of video games. That’s honestly what I do most of the time when I’m not making music.

Q: What never fails to put a smile on your face, no matter what?

Lil 2 Posh: Being around my close friends and family. I spend a lot of time in my own head when I’m alone, so being around the people closest to me brings me peace and always puts me in a better mood.
