THE WORD:

  • Multiple businesses across Chicago’s South Side have reportedly been targeted in a string of break-ins.
  • Businesses named in reports include Bronzeville Soul, Peach’s Restaurant, Soul Veg City, Hair Experts, Nadia’s Beauty Salon and more.
  • Queen Key recently took to social media after her Kolors store was reportedly broken into, sharing images of shattered glass outside the business.
  • Owners are left dealing with property damage, repair costs and concerns about protecting their businesses.

Among the latest incidents, Chicago rapper Queen Key took to Instagram after her Kolors store was reportedly broken into. The artist shared images showing shattered glass outside the business and expressed anger over what happened, questioning why someone would target her store.

“I’m done with Chicago!” Queen Key wrote in her post, explaining that she has continued to invest in the city and its people despite her success. Her comments reflected the frustration of a business owner who feels that her contributions to the community have not been respected.

Queen Key’s situation comes amid reports of other businesses being targeted across Chicago’s South Side. Businesses named in reports include Bronzeville Soul, Peach’s Restaurant, Soul Veg City, Hair Experts, Brown Sugar Bakery, Nadia’s Beauty Salon and way more.

The reported incidents involved storefronts being damaged as thieves allegedly smashed windows or forced their way inside. Some businesses reportedly lost cash registers, while others were left with broken glass, damaged property and costly repairs.

Peach’s Restaurant reportedly had to temporarily close following a break-in to clean up and address the damage. Soul Veg City, meanwhile, has reportedly experienced multiple break-ins, adding to the challenges of operating a neighborhood business.

The incidents have raised concerns about the financial and emotional toll these crimes place on business owners. Even when thieves leave with limited merchandise or cash, repairs, security upgrades and lost business can create significant expenses.

For Black-owned businesses, these establishments often represent years of hard work, personal investment and a commitment to serving their neighborhoods. A break-in can disrupt operations and leave owners questioning how they can continue protecting what they have built.

Business owners have reportedly met with local alderpeople and police to discuss possible solutions, including increased patrols, improved security systems and a stronger police presence along commercial corridors.

Queen Key’s post has also drawn reactions from followers and fellow artists expressing sympathy over the incident. Her frustration adds another public voice to the concerns being raised by Chicago entrepreneurs dealing with property damage and repeated security challenges.

The circumstances surrounding the Kolors incident, including the extent of any losses and whether anyone has been arrested, have not been independently confirmed. The status of investigations into the other reported break-ins also varies by incident.

As Chicago’s business community continues to deal with these incidents, owners are left facing the difficult task of repairing damage, protecting their livelihoods and keeping their doors open.
